The next morning, I woke up before the sun had even touched the horizon. I tried to go back to sleep but my brain was active immediately. Mitsuki was sleeping on my chest again, curled up in her fox shape, warm and breathing softly. I lifted her gently and moved her to the side, slipping out of the covers from underneath her.

I showered, had some breakfast, and got myself dressed. With a mug of coffee in hand, I stepped outside to enjoy the sunrise. Even looking up into the sky, my mind was a whirlwind of turmoil. I didn’t doubt that I could kick ass at the interview. The trouble was whether I should go to the interview at all.

My reverie was finally broken when my phone rang from my pocket.

“Dad? This is an odd hour to call,” I answered.

“Hey, big man. I gotta be straight with you. I’m going into surgery today. I’m at the hospital right now.”

Color drained from my face. I walked back inside and set my coffee mug down. “What’s going on? What happened?”

“Don’t worry so much, it’s a routine procedure. I’m getting a stent put in. Just a little tube in my heart. Your mom’s with me. I’m in good hands and all. I wanted to call and let you know what’s going on.”

I had to force myself to relax. I’d been jerked to two extremes of emotion too quickly. “Alright, so it’s just a little thing, right?”

“Yeah, yeah. Little thing. Still…” He went silent for a long moment.

“Dad?”

“Hey, y’know, I think after this I’m going to get an RV. Y’know? A camper.”

I chuckled quietly. It wasn’t like my dad to make sudden decisions like this. “What’s bringing all this on? Are you that worried about your surgery? Should I be worried about this surgery?”

“No, no, doctor says it’s all real easy. It just got me thinking, that’s all. I’ve always wanted an RV.”

“You’ve never mentioned it before.”

“I thought about it a lot but never did it. It’s something I’ve always wanted, sorta. Just driving out places. There’s great spots out in Colorado for camping. Maybe I’ll take some time off work and go out there. What’s that saying? You only live once, right?”

“Yeah, that. I guess I’m just a little blindsided by all of this.” Even as I said it, my brain was connecting the dots.

“You know how life changes. Certain things become more important, especially when a doctor says you’ve been eating too many fatty foods, y’know?” He laughed. It was dry.

I could read between the lines well enough. “Alright, let me know how it goes. I expect to hear back from you as soon as you’re out of that surgery, alright?”

“You bet, big man. Should be tomorrow morning. Gotta sleep off the anesthesia or whatever. I’ll talk to you then.”

“Good. I love you, dad.”

“Love you too, big man.”

I slumped down onto the couch and stared at my coffee. Running a hand through my hair, I decided to return to bed for a nap.
